Comparing contemporary biogeochemical archives from Mercenaria mercenaria and Crassostrea virginica: Insights on paleoenvironmental reconstructions

چکیده

Reconstruction of past environmental conditions from modern and fossil organisms is predicated on predictable biological responses to variation. Thus, understanding how different species record commonly experienced critical. This particularly important in settings where multiple biogeochemical archives are available for study (e.g., a rich assemblage). Previous work has documented species-specific thermal tolerances growth rates, which suggests proxy-based reconstructions may reflect combination controls To investigate this potential complication, we compared oxygen isotope (δ18O) profiles shells two contemporary marine bivalve mollusks (Mercenaria mercenaria Crassostrea virginica) growing the same locality (Cape Lookout region, North Carolina, USA). Carbonate samples (δ18Oc) were collected shell material deposited between August 2016 April 2019. These data calibrated with predicted δ18Oc (aragonite calcite) calculated high resolution records (hourly temperature weekly water samples). M. specimens periodically stained calcein during interval, facilitating transformation into time domain. C. virginica fit directly profile. Our results suggest that living Cape region capable depositing throughout year. Shell both slows significantly, or halts altogether, short term large magnitude freshwater input events. examined show strong preference warmest hours day. observation optimal temperatures lie close upper limit recorded at site. does not warm cold major conclusion place aspects conditions. Nevertheless, our findings contain more detailed than previously thought. Future studies should focus high-resolution, short-duration calibrations time, location, resolution.

Environmental controls on the stable isotopic composition of Mercenaria mercenaria: Potential application to paleoenvironmental studies

[1] We have investigated the environmental controls of seasonally resolved records of oxygen and carbon isotopes of modern Mercenaria mercenaria bivalves collected live from five coastal sites along the east coast of North America. Seasonal profiles of dO and dC obtained by subsampling the incremental growth layers of aragonite were compared with in situ historical records of temperature and sa...

Abundance of Vibrio cholerae, V. vulnificus, and V. parahaemolyticus in oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) from Long Island sound.

Vibriosis is a leading cause of seafood-associated morbidity and mortality in the United States. Typically associated with consumption of raw or undercooked oysters, vibriosis associated with clam consumption is increasingly being reported. However, little is known about the prevalence of Vibrio spp. in clams. The objective of this study was to compare the levels of Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio vuln...

Effects of the red tide dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis, on early development of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica and northern quahog Mercenaria mercenaria.

The brevetoxin-producing dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis, adversely affects many shellfish species including the commercially and ecologically important bivalve molluscs, the northern quahog (=hard clam) Mercenaria mercenaria and eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica, in the Gulf of Mexico, USA. This study assessed the effects of exposure of these bivalves to K. brevis during their early developm...

Photoreceptor Spike Responses in the Hardshell Clam, Mercenaria mercenaria

Spikes were recorded from single axons in the siphonal nerve of the hardshell clam Mercenaria mercenaria which respond to dimming of light. No axons were found to respond to the onset, or increase, of illumination. In a dark-adapted state there is little or no ongoing spike activity. The responsive area of a single axon is a circle of approximately 85 microm diameter on the inner siphon wall. T...

Oxidative burst in hard clam (Mercenaria mercenaria) haemocytes.

Haemocytes of bivalve molluscs are known to be responsible for many immunological functions, including recognition, phagocytosis, and killing or elimination of invading microorganisms, such as potentially infective bacteria and parasites. In many bivalves, killing of microorganisms engulfed by haemocytes is accomplished by a sudden release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the haemocytes;...
